Bronchial asthma is one of the most common chronic respiratory diseases worldwide. With the right treatment and habits, the vast majority of patients live full lives.
1. Stick to your treatment plan
Use your inhaler exactly as prescribed, even when you have no symptoms. Preventive therapy is the main factor in avoiding attacks.
2. Know your triggers
Dust, tobacco smoke, cold air, animal dander and certain smells can worsen asthma. Note which ones affect you and stay away from them.
3. Keep your home clean
Wash bedding in hot water, keep carpets to a minimum and control humidity so that mould and mites do not multiply.
4. Track peak flow
Monitoring your breathing strength at home helps you spot a decline before symptoms appear.
5. Get flu and pneumococcal vaccines
Respiratory infections flare up asthma; vaccines significantly reduce the risk.
6. Stay active
Exercise is not forbidden with asthma. Swimming and light aerobic activity improve lung function — just remember to warm up.
7. Have an action plan
Know in advance what to do during an attack and always carry your reliever medication.
Remember: if you have a persistent cough, night-time breathlessness or a growing need for your inhaler, consult a specialist.
