A cough may continue for some time after a cold or another respiratory infection. It can also be associated with asthma, nasal and sinus conditions, reflux, smoking or certain medicines. In adults, a cough lasting more than 8 weeks is considered chronic.
When should you see a doctor?
• Your cough lasts more than 3 weeks
• It wakes you at night or interferes with daily activities
• It keeps returning or persists despite previous treatment
• It is accompanied by unexplained weight loss
How is the cause of a cough investigated?
During the consultation, the doctor reviews when your cough started, whether it is dry or produces phlegm, what makes it worse, your smoking history and the medicines you take.
Depending on your symptoms and examination findings, investigations may include a chest X-ray, spirometry and other appropriate tests.
How is treatment chosen?
Treatment is tailored to the cause of the cough. Antibiotics are not needed for every persistent cough. Your response to treatment is reviewed, and further assessment is arranged if symptoms continue.
