Bronchiectasis — diagnosis and treatment

Assessment of persistent cough with phlegm and recurrent lung infections. Bronchiectasis diagnosis in Baku, with an individualised treatment and follow-up plan.

Bronchiectasis is a chronic lung condition characterised by damage and permanent widening of the airways. Clearing mucus from the airways becomes more difficult. Mucus build-up can lead to persistent coughing and recurrent infections.

Which symptoms should prompt a consultation?

  • Persistent or recurring cough with phlegm

  • Producing large amounts of phlegm

  • Recurrent lung infections

  • Shortness of breath and wheezing

  • Fatigue and reduced exercise tolerance

These symptoms can also occur with other conditions, so it is important to have their cause assessed by a doctor.

How is bronchiectasis diagnosed?

During the consultation, your symptoms, previous infections, other health conditions and existing test results are reviewed.

A chest computed tomography (CT) scan is one of the main investigations used to confirm the diagnosis. CT images are assessed alongside your symptoms and other medical information.

When needed, microbiological sputum testing, blood tests and spirometry to assess lung function are arranged. Possible underlying causes of bronchiectasis are also investigated.

How is treatment selected?

Treatment aims to make mucus easier to clear, reduce infections and flare-ups, and keep symptoms under control.

Appropriate breathing techniques and other measures to help clear mucus from the airways are recommended. Assessment by a physiotherapist may be arranged when needed.

During a flare-up, the need for antibiotics and the choice of medication are assessed according to your clinical condition and previous and current sputum test results. Other medicines are selected based on any accompanying conditions and your individual needs.

The treatment plan also includes advice on avoiding smoking, suitable physical activity and recommended vaccinations.

How is follow-up carried out?

Follow-up appointments assess coughing, phlegm, shortness of breath, the frequency of infections and the response to treatment. Tests are repeated and the treatment plan is updated when needed.
